ABOUT THIS SITE

About the Southern Highlands of NSW.

Although the Highlands themselves are rapidly changing, with residential and commercial developments forced upon it by the outward pressure of the coastal urban areas, its people have found a way to rediscover and preserve its past, its heritage, and its environment.

Those who move here have their lives subtly altered by the rhythm of the seasons, and the atmosphere of the Highlands.

Although today's Highlands lifestyle is not like it was a generation or so ago when this was a sleepy country area, it is certainly more relaxed and fulfilling than life in the city.

Where once it took half a day to get to the big city, now the trip is achieved on the freeway in just over an hour.

The magnetic attraction of the Southern Highlands still pulls hundreds of thousands of tourists each year, just as it did earlier in the century when they arrived by steam train for their holidays. Except today, they are more likely to come by road on a day trip.

So, this website is for the geographically or historically curious; for the tourist or traveller passing by on the great highways (either the F5, or the "Information Superhighway"!); and for the people who live here.

About the website.

This site began modestly in mid July 1998 to show something on the world wide web of the beauty, history, and lifestyle of this area - a gateway, as it were to the Southern Highlands of New South Wales.

With the support and encouragement of many local people and businesses, it has grown considerably.

There are many more pages here than the browser can, or may even wish to, take in at one visit.

There are over 500 A4 pages of information and 1200 images to date (over 14 million page impressions to 2016). More are being uploaded and updated regularly.

We hope you will come back again and explore more of the timeless beauty of our scenery and history, and visit many more of our local attractions, activities, and businesses.
