HIGHLANDS TO CITY

There are regular train services, almost hourly during the day, between Sydney (links to suburban services), the Highlands, and Goulburn (although some terminate at Moss Vale or Bundanoon).

Trains from Sydney leave from Sydney Central (suburban platforms); some services commence or terminate at Campbelltown. Check timetables for connections to and from various suburban services.

Although there are regular bus services throughout the Highlands, it is possible to travel between the towns listed on the map above by rail (approx. every hour during the day).

However, not all stations are always attended and you may have to purchase your ticket at your destination or on the train.

HIGHLANDS TO COUNTRY NSW & INTERSTATE

There are several trains a day between Sydney, the Highlands, and Canberra. There is also a weekly service to south western NSW and Griffith. Bookings are essential on these services. Some trains stop only at Moss Vale.

There is also a CountryLink Bus Service from the Highlands to the Shoalhaven region on the South Coast.

The Highlands is on the main Southern Line to Victoria and trains for Melbourne can be joined at Moss Vale. Bookings essential. Travel by rail to western and northern NSW and to other states is available from Sydney Central.

Cockatoo Run Railway

THE COCKATOO RUN

The Illawarra Scenic Mountain Railway - known as the Cockatoo Run - travels one of the most scenic stretches of railway in Australia, 600 metres up the escarpment from Unanderra on the coast to Robertson in the Southern Highlands.

Hauled by heritage (diesel) locomotives and restored carriages of the 30s and 40s, The Cockatoo Run is a day trip to be experienced.

Passengers join train at 9.00am in Sydney and travel via Wollongong to Robertson, then coach tour to Burrawang and Statford Park Lavender Farm. Trains every Wednesday and Sunday.

3801 STEAM TRAIN

The 3801 is a heritage steam train which regularly visits the Highlands during festivals and on other occasions during the year. Trains leave from the country terminal at Sydney Central. Bookings in advance are always required.

NOTE: All public transport in Australia is non-smoking. Advanced bookings and reservations are required for all CountryLink services, plus the special Cockatoo Run and 3801 trains. Bookings are not required on CityRail services. Basic refreshment services available on all trains except CityRail.
