There are regular train services throughout the day between Sydney (links to suburban services), the Highlands, and Goulburn (although some terminate at Moss Vale or Bundanoon).

Trains from Sydney leave from Sydney Central (suburban platforms); some services commence or terminate at Campbelltown. Check timetables for connections to and from various suburban services. Some train services may be replaced by CityRail bus, which travel via the railway stations.

Although there are regular bus services throughout the Highlands, it is possible to travel between the towns listed on the map above by rail.

CityRail also runs a bus service from Bowral to Colo Vale, Hilltop, Balmoral, Buxton, Couridjah, Thirlmere and Picton on the Old Loop Line.

However, not all stations are always attended and you may have to purchase your ticket at your destination or on the train/bus.

Heritage Express operates day excursions on heritage trains from March to November on the Southern Highlander starting at Sydney Central, Padstow or Campbelltown via Picton, then up the long climb into the Southern Highlands, through the rolling countryside of Bowral and Moss Vale, before arriving at Robertson - then down to the coast back to Sydney.

The circular route offers constantly-changing views of the green fields and valleys of the highlands, rainforest and seaside. On the return path, the train pauses to disembark passengers at Sutherland and Hurstville, before arriving back at Sydney Central.
