tuliptime logo25 SEP - 8 OCT: BOWRAL TULIP TIME

Tulip Time at Bowral is one of Australia's biggest floral festivals, attracting tens of thousands of visitors.

The centrepiece to festivities is a massed display of 100,000 tulips and 25,000 annuals in Corbett Gardens, Bowral.

There are also: some private gardens open for inspection - including tours and talks, and a shuttle bus which runs from Bowral station (on weekends) ; a street fair; window displays; and entertainment throughout the festival in Corbett Gardens.

Admission to Corbett Gardens is $8.00pp and $5 for concessions and children from 13 to 17 years, children under 12 free. For groups of 20+ the cost is $4.50 pp.

Robertson Heritage Railway Station Inc which organises the Fair each year is a non-profit association run by volunteers and all funds raised will be used in the maintenance and management of the railway station site.

Organised this year by the Southern Highlands Carriage Club, the elegance of a bygone era will combine with spectacular action when Carriage Driving returns to the Southern Highlands.

Demonstrating high standards of horsemanship, beautifully prepared and presented animals and amazing skills of the drivers and grooms.

19 OCT: ANNUAL BILL O'REILLY INVITATION CRICKET MATCH

The Wingello Tigers CC combined Riverine/Wyangle CC's are back again in October to compete in the annual Michael O'Reilly XII V Wingello Tigers XII.

Funds raised will go towards the long term mission, which includes club rooms with a facility for a Bill O'Reilly display/museum. This future facility has the support if the Bradman Foundation, and will become a welcome addition to the Bradman Museum cricket trail.

19 OCT: THE SILVER TASSIE

The fifth annual Silver Tassie - the Australasian Young Piper of the Year (a solo bagpiping competitionfor pipers in age groups under 26).

This prestigious contest leads to the award of the title of Australasian Young Piper of the Year.

The competition gets underway at 9.00am and runs throughout the day. Competitors are coming all the way from Dunedin in New Zealand so it will truly be an international competition. Everyone is welcome to come and support these fine young musicians as they play terrific pipe music on a candlelit stage. Entry to the hall is free. Come along and cheer for your nation!

8 - 9 NOV: VAUDE HIGHLAND FLING

One of Australia's premier mountain bike events - a 100km mountain bike race starting and finishing in Bundanoon. Other elements include a shorter race stage on the Saturday, The Bundanoon Dash, Relay (Flinging Threesomes), Half Distance (Half a Fling).

Elite riders, regular recreational mountain bikers, corporate groups. 1000 riders, substantial prize money; includes Australian MTB Marathon Championships.

Includes bike ride from Berrima around vineyards with lunch and wine and food tastings.

The VAUDE Highland Fling is run by Wild Horizons and also raises funds for a number of local community groups involved in the staging of the event.

Every Australia Day there is a street festival, parade, ceremony, bands, entertainment and activities for all the family in Historic Berrima.

With over 60-market stalls local and interstate and entertainment for all the family grand parades vintage cars, fire engine displays, fresh produce markets, face painting there is something for every one. The atmosphere is one of a real Aussie family day out with a bit of patriotism and pride in our country thrown in for good measure.

The official part of the day starts at the Historic Berrima Court House Museum at 9.30am where Young Citizen and Citizen of the Year awards are given by the Mayor of the Shire. This is followed by an address by the Australia Day Ambassador then it's tea and damper for all.

Historic Vehicles RallyHISTORIC VEHICLES, ANNUAL RALLY

Annual rally of the Berrima District Historic Vehicle Club inc. with 100 historic vehicles coming from all over the state for two days of social events, displays and runs across the Highlands.

Vehicles will be at the Mittagong Community Centre, corner Albert and Queen Streets Mittagong, on Saturday 17th February 2007 from 10.00am to 12.00noon for display and judging. As well, all entrants in the Rally have a vote for the best car in the decades of construction, example 1940-49.

Visitors are welcome and there is no entry charge unless wishing to display or enter an historic vehicle which incurs a fee of $30. Vehicles entered or displayed must be 30 years old or older at the date of the Rally.

For Rally entrants there will be a dinner dance on the Saturday night with the theme of nursery rhyme/fairytale. Runs will be held Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. For further information or entry form please ring (02) 4889 4251.

7 MAR: THIRLMERE FESTIVAL OF STEAM

See Thirlmere come alive with steam trains, steam machinery, historic vehicles, stalls, displays by local groups and much more. See Thomas the Tank Engine. Ride the steam locos 3801, 3830 and 3112 - hourly departures from Thirlmere station.

Visitors can also explore the NSW Rail Transport Museum with Australia's largest display of historic locomotives, carriages and rail memorabilia. Lots of activities.

Eco Expo 29 MAR: ECO EXPO 2009

Oxley College P&F will hold an Eco Expo to provide a positive and interesting view on eco-friendly living and to show individuals that their choices can make a very real difference to our environment.

Visitors to the expo will have the opportunity to see and experience a range of products and services in a relaxed environment as well as hearing from experts who will enable them to make informed decisions about ecologically sustainable living in their homes, workplaces and in the buying choices that they make.

Broadly, the Eco Expo will focus on saving water, saving energy, reducing waste, sustainable transport, increasing recycling and organic gardening and food. 

The event will cater for all age groups - from school children to seniors.  A number of innovative and entertaining activities are being planned including a sculpture competition for local schools which will utilize recycled materials from Wingecarribee Shire's Resource Recovery Centre.

Held every March at the Moss Vale Showgrounds over 3 days, the Moss Vale Agricultural Show is one of NSW's largest country shows.

Attractions include: Horse, Showjumping, Beef Cattle, Boer Goats, Alpaca Display, Poultry, Woodchop, Farmyard Nursery & the Pavilion - with Arts & Crafts needlework, handcraft exhibits, photography, preserves & cooking, porcelain, wool weaving, flowers, fruit & vegetable, displays fireworks and Sideshow Alley.

4 APR: BUNDANOON IS BRIGADOON

For one day every year the mythical village of Brigadoon rises from the mists, and Bundanoon in the Southern Highlands become Brigadoon - one of the world's largest Highland Gatherings.

Hundreds of pipers and drummers, a street parade, massed bands, Highland Games (toss the caber!), and hundreds of stalls, displays and activities.

Bundanoon is Brigadoon normally attracts up to 20,000 visitors from around Australia, and is one of the major events of the Southern Highlands.

Not to be missed! Whether you are of Scots ancestry, or looking for one of the most enjoyable and interesting of days out with the family, a trip to Brigadoon (perhaps on the heritage "Southern Aurora" train) will be a day to remember.

SIBERIAN HUSKY CLUB - NEW SEASON MUSHUP

Pointscore event of the Siberian Husky Club NSW Inc - sled dog racing over 2 days.

Sled dogs (more popularly known as huskies) are the main traditional method of transport for the Inuit of northern Canada, and the Eskimos of the Arctic. Australian scientists and explorers have also traditionally used them in the Antarctic.

Although there is no snow, the races here are adapted for local conditions, and sled dog fanciers pit their skills - and those of their dogs - on cross country racing. Families and children welcome - but please leave pets at home.

SIBERIAN HUSKY CLUB - DASH IN THE DARK

Pointscore event of the Siberian Husky Club NSW Inc - sled dog racing over 2 days.

Night time event, with proceeds going to the Guide Dog Association.

Although there is no snow, the races here are adapted for local conditions, and sled dog fanciers pit their skills - and those of their dogs - on cross country racing. Families and children welcome - but please leave pets at home.

18 AUG: VIETNAM VETERANS DAY

All Vietnam Veterans and their families are invited to take part in a ceremony at Cherry Tree Walk, Settlers Park, Bowral - Australia's major Vietnam War Memorial. Starts 3.30pm.

The ceremony commemorates the role of D Company 6RAR in the battle of Long Tan, near the Australian base at Nui Dat in 1966.

DUQ QUILT INDULGENCE FESTIVAL

Australian and international quilt shows, workshops, a quilter's market, gala dinner and a quilt challenge, are just some of the exciting events to be held during this festival. A must for anyone who is 'crafty'. To be held at Mittagong RSL and various locations throughout the Southern Highlands.

THROSBY PARK OPEN DAY

Home of Charles Throsby - the Throsby Park Historic Site is one of great interest and is a remarkable representative of the activities of landholders since the 1830's. This is especially important in NSW where most of the large early homesteads built close to Sydney have subsequently lost their early outbuildings and farmyard details.

Built in 1834 on land granted by Governor Macquarie in 1819, this large and distinctive Colonial residence has been the home of the Throsby Family for 5 generations. Many of the items in the house are Throsby family relics.

Open from 10am until 3.00pm. Admission Adults $5, child 5-16 yrs $3 and Family $12.

tuliptime BOWRAL TULIP TIME

Tulip Time at Bowral is one of Australia's biggest floral festivals, attracting tens of thousands of visitors.

The centrepiece to festivities is a massed display of 100,000 tulips and 25,000 annuals in Corbett Gardens, Bowral.

There are also: some private gardens open for inspection - including tours and talks, and a shuttle bus which runs from Bowral station (on weekends) ; a street fair; window displays; and entertainment throughout the festival in Corbett Gardens.

Admission to Corbett Gardens is $8.00pp and $5 for concessions and children from 13 to 17 years, children under 12 free. For groups of 20+ the cost is $4.50 pp.

FITZROY FALLS FIRE TRAIL MARATHON

The Fitzroy Falls Fire Trail Marathon is an annual run which commences at 8.00am. There are 10km and 5km fire trail charity fun runs and walk for all the family starting at 9.00am as well as the marathon for serious runners 42.195km run quite separately with full runner support. Start 8.00am. Fitzroy Falls. (Proceeds support Bush Fire Brigades in the area.)
